About the Building

Praised by Walt Whitman as the “noblest of Washington buildings,” the museums’ home is considered one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the United States. Begun in 1836 and completed in 1868, it was the home of the U.S. Patent Office and the site of Abraham Lincoln’s inaugural ball in March 1865. The two museums have resided here since 1968.

What is the Reynolds Center?

Since 2005, the two museums have been collectively known as the Donald W. Reynolds Center for American Art and Portraiture, in recognition of a generous gift from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation.

Dining Guide

The Courtyard Cafe on the first floor in the Kogod Courtyard offers sandwiches, panini, soups, a salad bar, pastries, ice cream, specialty coffees and bottled beverages. Open daily 11:30 to 6:30, with a limited menu after 3 on weekdays and after 4 on weekends. Visit si.edu/group_tours, to receive discounts for groups of 20 or more.

The Stores

Two stores, located at the G Street entrance, offer gifts inspired by the collections at the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
